Felt Lightbulb Ornaments

Looking for a small holiday gift "add on", a delightful handmade ornament, or an easy Christmas craft? These simple felt lightbulb ornaments are perfect "quick and easy" holiday crafts, and I love how colourful and fun they are. Today I am sharing the step-by-step tutorial for these adorable felt ornaments.

To make these ornaments:
1) Cut two lightbulb shapes and two lightbulb tops from coloured felt.
2) Using matching embroidery floss, attach a hanger made from a piece of twine.
3) Use white embroidery floss to stitch the two lightbulb shapes together (with a small amount of cotton stuffing inside).
4) Stitch the lightbulb tops to the top of the ornament.

The best thing about these ornaments is that they can be made in many colours. You can totally make them to match any Christmas decor or colour scheme.

I made my lightbulb ornaments in blue, red and green.

I made a bunch, and I plan to stick them in Christmas cards, add them to gifts, and hang them on my tree. Cute, right?

These ornaments would be a wonderful project for someone that is just learning to sew. The felt is easy to work with, and the stitching is easy. If you decide to make these felt lightbulb ornaments, let me know what colours you chose.

Elegant DIY Winter Wreath

This time of year, I take down my Christmas wreath, and I try to come up with a pretty DIY winter wreath to replace it.  Today, I hung this elegant felt wreath on my front door, and I absolutely love it!

To make this wonderful winter wreath:

1) Start by cutting a circle from foam core (from the dollar store).  I cut mine about 2 inches thick.  Don't worry about jagged edges because you won't see them when the wreath is completed.

2) Wrap yarn around the foam core securing with hot glue periodically.

3) Make A LOT of white felt roses, and hot glue them to the wreath.  You can find a step-by-step tutorial for making felt roses here.

4) Add a bow.  (I found this teal/glittery bow in the Easter section at the dollar store).

I am so pleased with how this felt winter wreath turned out -- and it was super-easy and inexpensive! What do you hang on your front door this time of year?

PS - You can also modify this design by adding a red ribbon for Christmas.

Santa Wreath

Sometimes you need to add a little "whimsey" to your holiday decor, and this simple DIY Santa wreath fits the bill perfectly.  It is easy and inexpensive to make and lots of fun!

Want to make your own DIY Santa wreath?

1) Start by cutting a circle from foam core (from the dollar store).  I cut mine about 2 inches thick.  Don't worry about jagged edges because you won't see them when the wreath is completed.

2) Wrap yarn around the foam core securing with hot glue periodically.

3) Make A LOT of white felt roses, and hot glue them to the wreath.  You can find a step-by-step tutorial for making felt roses here.

4) Add a dollar store Santa hat to the top of the wreath.  You can secure it with hot glue or straight pins.  (I also stuffed some tissue paper into the hat to add a little shape to it.)

That's it!  Simple, right?

Doesn't it look cute on my front door?  I think I might switch the Santa hat for a snowman hat when Christmas is over.  What do you think?

Simple Felt Ornament {Star}

I love to make simple felt ornaments (each year) for our Christmas tree.  They are also great to share with friends.  Here is the simple star ornament I created this year.

To make your own felt ornament:

1)  Collect your supplies.  You'll need a piece of ribbon, a little white button, two circles cut from red felt, and one star cut from green felt.

2)  Stitch the star to one of the felt circles.

3)  Sew a button onto the middle of the star.

4)  Add a ribbon, and stitch the second felt circle to the felt circle containing the star.

That's it!  Don't you just love how easy, inexpensive and cute this little felt ornament is?  I think it would be a great beginner sewing project too.

Simple Felt Ornament - Santa Belly

Every year, I come up with a simple felt ornament that I can send out with my Christmas cards.  Because I make so many, I always design something that is easy, inexpensive, and lightweight.  Here is the felt ornament I am sending out this year.

Cute, right?  My 4 year old calls it a "Santa Belly" ornament.

Here's how easy it is to make your own:

1)  Cut two identical circles from red felt.  {Mine were about 3 inches in diameter.}

2)  Cut a black strip of felt, and stitch it onto the middle of one of the circles.  {Mine was about 1/4" wide.}

3)  Sew a yellow button onto the middle of the circle with the black stripe.

4)  Attach a ribbon hanger, and stitch the 2nd red circle onto the back of the front circle.

This year, I made 60 of these ornaments.  I think they make sending out Christmas cards a little more fun, don't you?

Heart Rosette Valentines Wreath {take two}

A couple of weeks ago, I shared a heart-shaped felt rosette wreath I made using a wreath form made from an old cardboard box.  I changed my mind about the ribbon, and thought I would show you my new version.  Here it is:

And in case you missed it, here was what it looked like before.

Which one do you prefer? The full tutorial for the original wreath can be found here.

I love the classic and clean look of the new version. What do you think?

Felt Stocking Ornaments

When I was in high school , I started making Christmas ornaments for my girlfriends. Over time, I started making them for over 40 family and friends. I like to make a simple ornament that can be slipped in with a Christmas card. Here is the "quick and easy" Christmas ornament I am making this year.

I just love these little felt stockings because they are so simple and inexpensive to make.

Here is what you'll need: scrap white felt, scrap red felt, two red buttons, a piece of ribbon, some red and white embroidery floss, a needle, and a template that you can find here.

Here's what you do:

Step 1: Cut two stocking shapes from the white felt and cut one rectangle (for the top of the stocking) from the red felt.

Step 2: Using red embroidery thread, stitch the bottom of the rectangle to one of the white stocking shapes. This will be the front of the ornament. (Just stitch the bottom of the rectangle. The rest will be attached when you stitch the front piece to the back piece.)

Step 3: Sew two red buttons onto the piece that has the red felt stitched to the top.

Step 4: Stitch a piece of ribbon to the other white stocking shape. This will be the back of the stocking. (I used white thread so that you wouldn't be able to see it on the back of the ornament.)

Step 5: Stitch the front and back pieces together using red embroidery thread. That's it!

Easy, right? I can't wait to see these little felt stockings hanging on the trees of my loved ones.

Simple No-Sew Super Hero Cape

This cape is really fun and "super" easy {pun intended}.  I did a little hand-stitching to make it cuter and more durable, but you could easily use fabric glue if you want to make a "no-sew" version. I am planning on making a bunch of these capes for the boys and their guests at the Super Hero birthday party we are having in July.  The boys are "super" excited.  :-)

What I used:
  • white felt (cheap and easy to work with)
  • red and blue felt (any colors would work... these ones go with my birthday party color scheme)
  • white embroidery thread and a needle (but fabric glue could be used instead)
  • white button
  • self sticking Velcro
  • scissors

What I did:

1)  Using a word processing program, I made a letter template (inside a circle).

2)  I used the paper template to cut out a blue felt letter (the first letter of the child's name) and a red felt circle.  I then stitched the letter to the circle using white embroidery thread.  (Glue could be used if you are making a "no-sew" version.)

3)  I cut a basic "cape shape" out of the white felt.  My cape was about 26 inches from the neck to the bottom, and the straps where about 5 inches.

4)  I cut some red felt to attach to the straps for some color (but this step could be skipped for a "no-sew" version).  I then attached one piece of Velcro to the top of the right strap and the bottom of the left strap, and reinforced it with a couple of stitches.  I added a white button embellishment (for decoration only) and stitched the red felt to the straps.

5)  Finally, I stitched the red circle to the cape.  (Again, this could be done with glue if desired. That's it!  Done... and ready for your Super Hero in training!

At the birthday party, I am going to have the kids decorate their capes with foam star stickers.  Won't that be cute????

Felt Food - Carrot

Looking for some more cute “pretend” food for your kids to play with?

As a follow up to yesterday's tutorial on how to make adorable felt eggs out of scraps of felt, here is one on how to make felt carrots.  My boys love having this cute felt food in their play kitchen.

You’ll need:
  • Scraps of orange and green felt
  • Cotton balls or stuffing
  • A needle and thread (orange)
  • Scissors
  • Paper and pencil to make a template

Directions:

Cut two carrot shapes out of orange felt and one rectangle out of green felt.  (You can make a paper template first.  It makes it a little easier.)

Stitch the green rectangle onto on of the orange pieces.  (See diagram for positioning.)

Use scissors to "fringe" the green triangle.

Place the second orange piece on top and stitch one side.  Add cotton, and finish stitching.

That's it -- even the Easter Bunny would be impressed!
