Simple Handmade Mother's Day Gift... with free downloadable print

There is nothing better than a handmade gift from a child on Mother's Day, and I've got a super-cute one for you today. Young kids will love it, but it's perfect for older kids too. I'm even sharing a FREE picture you can download. Check out all the details of the simple button frame for Mother's Day below.

I started with this dollar store frame I had leftover from Easter, but you can use any frame you have. For my frame, I got rid of the little balls inside the frame, and I used nail polish remove to get rid of the words on the glass.

Then, I printed the picture I designed, cut it to fit, and popped it in my frame.

You can put anything you want in the frame, but if you want to use the print I designed: click on the picture below, right-click, save it to your computer, and print it like a regular 4x6 photo.

Then, use hot glue to attach the buttons to the frame. (If little children are making this, use a good quality white glue, and leave lots of time to let it dry completely.)

Isn't it cute? I love the "Moms are like buttons... they hold everything together." saying, don't you?

This would be a fun project using a frame made of popsicle sticks too. Or you could use the print I designed to make a card or a magnet for the fridge. It's really up to you!

What mom wouldn't love this handmade frame? And, let's be honest... moms really do hold everything together! 😀

St.Patrick's Day Yarn Ornaments

Holiday crafts are so much fun, and the two I am sharing with you today are super-cute and easy to make. They use yarn and dollar store supplies, and are perfect for kids and adults. Check out the adorable St.Patrick's Day crafts below.

The first craft is a green yarn hat ornament. Trust me, when you start making these hats, you are going to be totally addicted. 😄

1) Cut a 1 cm slice from an empty toilet roll. Then, cut approximately 35 strands of yarn (30cm in length). Note: You may need more or less yarn. It will depend on the weight/thickness of the yarn.

2) Loop all the strands (one at a time) through the cardboard roll and pull tight. Continue until the entire cardboard piece is covered.

3) Push all the yarn down through the centre of the roll to create a hat "brim", and tie the top of the hat (about an inch from the top) with a piece of matching yarn. Tie a loop (at the top of the piece of yarn used to tie the top of the hat) to create a hanger for the ornament.

4) Trim the top of the hat to make a pom pom, and use hot glue to attach a felt shamrock to the front of the yarn hat.

You can display the leprechaun hat as it is, or you can make a pom pom and transform it into a St.Patrick's Day gnome.

To make the St.Patrick's Day gnome:

You'll need to make the hat (above), and then you'll need to make a pom pom for the beard. You can find a video explaining how to make pom poms here.

1) Wrap yarn around your hand approximately 60 times (or more if the yarn is a lighter weight/thinkness).

2) Carefully remove the yarn from your hand and tie a piece of yarn tightly around the centre.

3) Cut the loops with sharp scissors, and trim the pom pom until it is round and fluffy.

4) Then, assemble the ornament. Use hot glue to attach the hat to the handmade pom pom.

5) Use hot glue to attach the pom pom nose.

Cute, right?!? You can hang them anywhere, or set them on a shelf. I have a bunch around my house, but I especially love them hanging from this little white tree.

Check out this video for another way to learn how to do this simple craft.

This really is the perfect craft project for St. Patrick's Day. It fun for kids, and adults will love it too!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Valentine's Day Gnome Ornament

Holiday crafts are the best, don't you think? They are fun to make and can be used as festive decor. Many crafted items also make wonderful handmade gifts that can be shared with family and friends. Today, I am sharing a step-by-step tutorial for adorable Valentine's Day gnome ornaments.

To make your own Valentine's Day gnome ornament:

1) Gather your supplies. You'll need: a ruler, sharp scissors, and empty paper towel roll, a pom pom, a bit of felt (or other heart-shaped embelishment for the hat), hot glue, and two colours of yarn (white and pink or red).

First, make the hat:

2) Cut a 1 cm slice from an empty toilet roll. Then, cut approximately 35 strands of yarn (30cm in length). Note: You may need more or less yarn. It will depend on the weight/thickness of the yarn.

3) Loop all the strands (one at a time) through the cardboard roll and pull tight. Continue until the entire cardboard piece is covered.

4) Push all the yarn down through the centre of the roll to create a hat "brim", and tie the top of the hat (about an inch from the top) with a piece of matching yarn. Tie a loop (at the top of the piece of yarn used to tie the top of the hat) to create a hanger for the ornament.

5) Trim the top of the hat to make a pom pom, and use hot glue to attach a felt heart to the front of the yarn hat.

Next, make the pom pom for the beard:

You can also find a video explaining how to make pom poms here.

6) Wrap yarn around your hand approximately 60 times (or more if the yarn is a lighter weight/thinkness).

7) Carefully remove the yarn from your hand and tie a piece of yarn tightly around the centre.

8) Cut the loops with sharp scissors, and trim the pom pom until it is round and fluffy.

Then, assemble the ornament:

9) Use hot glue to attach the hat to the handmade pom pom.

10) Use hot glue to attach the pom pom nose.

Here's a 3 minute video that shows you how I made my Valentine's Day gnome ornament.

These ornaments can be hung anywhere, but I love how sweet they look on this little lighted tree. Cute, right?

Age appropriate crafts are a great way to get kids to exercise their creativity... and to get away from their screens. Younger children are happy with simple crafts with basic materials, but older kids prefer more sophisticated materials and projects. Today, I am sharing 10 fantastic crafts for tweens and teens.

2) Felt finger puppets - Felt is a perfect material for young people learning to sew. It is cheap and super-easy to work with. Making finger puppets is wonderful sewing projects for beginners. They can be given as gifts or donated to a children's hospital! You can find a full tutorial for making felt finger puppets here.

7) Toilet roll weaving - Toilet roll weaving is simple... and totally addictive. You can use a toilet roll, yarn and popsicle sticks to weave a snake, necklace, bracelet or rug. Once you start this fun craft project, you won't be able to stop. You can find the step by step tutorial for toilet roll weaving here.

8) Tassel bookmarks - Paper bookmarks are fun, but bookmarks with easy-to-make yarn tassels are even better. Find the full step by step instructions for creating these cute bookmarks here.

9) 3D handprint art - Simple handprint artwork can be created with only paper and markers. You can find the step by step instructions here.

10) Simple beaded key chain - Dollar store beads can be strung and attached to key rings to create a variety of beaded key chains. You can also add words and messages to wooden beads with a Sharpie. Make a bunch of these to hang from backpacks or give as gifts.

How much fun are all these projects?

Do you have tweens and teens that like to craft? Do you have a favourite project to share? Did one of mine make your list?

Happy crafting!
